The picture is of her character, Hiso Noriko. I chose to depict her in a winter setting because of her detached, emotionless air. She interests me because she obviously wasn't always such a cold person; at one point in her life, she must have been joyful and loving. The frost creeping onto her body represents her unhappiness, and the title "a heart in winter", speaks to her inability to break out of her frozen state. At the same time, the imagery presents a hopeful picture, because with ice comes the possibility of melting, and with winter comes the promise of eventual spring. Who knows...maybe someday someone will come along to help her thaw out a little
With this image, I worked closely from the reference material to try to get skin shading/lighting/etc right (really, I should be doing this more often anyway, since it's a great learning tool). This exercise taught me a bit more about how light falls on the body, although I still had trouble with the ice and getting the face/hair to look realistic. Oh well, you win some, you lose some, right?
Anyway, enjoy my foray into painterly-stuff. It won't happen again any time soon
